Megan Fleming
Vocals & Keys
Megan has loved music for as long as she can remember. Between her multiinstrumentalist father, and mother who moonlighted as disc jockey on a local radio station, music was always in the house. She studied classical, then pop piano from K-12, and later jazz piano in college at Denison University while majoring in Biology and Spanish. Megan later expanded her musical interests through picking up the guitar and later taking voice lessons. She loves singing across multiple genres, especially pop and jazz. She joined the DC Starlight Orchestra in 2017 after knowing several friends and colleagues in the band. Megan works as a Biologist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She is grateful for the chance to deepen her understanding of jazz music while playing with this wonderful group of talented musicians.
Jonathan Marks
Keys
Jon joined the DC Starlight Orchestra in 2018 at the invitation of Norm Boyle. He’s played keyboard in numerous garage rock bands since sixth grade and has also accompanied amateur theatrical productions and other musical endeavors. Jazz is a relatively new adventure for Jon, although he played trumpet in his college jazz band. He’s originally from Connecticut and has lived around the world (China, Russia, Hungary, Romania and Germany). While serving as a career Foreign Service Officer with the Department of Commerce, he enjoyed playing piano at embassy receptions and holiday parties.
Andre Cutair
Guitar & Bass
Born to two Peabody Conservatory of Music grads, Andre has been surrounded by music from an early age. He’s a fan of many genres, and currently focuses on traditional and modern jazz, along with trip hop and experimental music.
Kathy Hurld
Bass
Kathy started playing the bass in High School and played in Orchestra through college. After a 10 year hiatus, and encouragement from a former Starlight member, she joined the Starlight Orchestra and has been playing with them since. Through Starlight, Kathy has met many incredible artists and has played with and for other groups throughout the DC Metro area such as Hexagon, British Players, NIH Orchestra.
Chris Biles
Drums
Chris (she/her) started playing drums in 6th grade and played in school jazz ensembles through high school. She enjoyed playing in her school’s funk band and improvisation labs throughout college at St. Lawrence University. Chris moved to the DC area in 2019 and joined the Starlight Orchestra in 2022 as the group resumed playing post-COVID, and is thrilled to have this fun, supportive, and inclusive band to return to her personal jazz roots. Chris works as an International Program Specialist with the Foreign Agricultural Service at the USDA. But she is also a published poet, enjoys dabbling in various visual art forms, and can be found at the climbing gym, out in nature or wandering the city streets, or at home with her partner, two cats, and dog.
Carey Johnston
Alto Sax 1
Carey joined the band around 2002 at the invitation of fellow Starlight saxophonist Tom Wall. He has a deep love and appreciation for jazz ever since his middle school music teacher played a few tracks from a Brecker Brothers album. He played bari sax in the University of Virginia Jazz Ensemble for four years under the direction of John D'earth while earning an engineering degree. He currently also plays sax in a number of other community music groups. He works for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an engineer focusing on protecting our lakes, rivers, and streams from water pollution.
Norman Boyle
Alto Sax 2 & Flute
Norm was introduced to music at a young age by his mother, who played honky tonk piano by ear, and his grandparents who played and acted in melodramas, on the radio, and weekend dances. He decided to learn saxophone like his grandfather and especially loved playing in the high school jazz band. Norm saw a flyer in an EPA pantry, and joined Starlight Orchestra in 2013. Norm is very grateful to be able to play with this amazing group of musicians and friends.
Jessica Ernst
Alto 2
Jessica started playing the saxophone in 5th grade, and was in jazz band, pep band, concert band, and marching band in high school. She competed at the state level and became the drum major in the marching band. Jessica played in various concert bands in college and learned how to play a similar instrument in Thailand while on a Fulbright scholarship, but then mostly kept her saxophone in storage until joining the Starlight Orchestra in 2024. Jessica is grateful for the opportunity to rediscover her love of playing and the fun of playing in a group. Outside of the band, being from the great state of Wisconsin, Jessica is known for her strong feelings about ice cream and couch-coaching the Green Bay Packers football team.
Tom Wall
Tenor 1
Tom Wall has played saxophone and recorders and sung in various groups since he was a kid. Influences include his stepfather, Charles Hardin, who was Musick Master at Colonial Williamsburg and Vera Rathkamp, choir director at York High School. He joined the DC Starlight Orchestra in the early aughts while working for clean water at the U.S. EPA. Recently retired from EPA after forty years of federal service, he hopes to play more music!
